The “layer” is a vital feature of software such as Gimp. Layers underlie many effects, often mirroring photographic film techniques. This article is provides a basic introduction to Layers.

A simple analogy to the layer would be a sheet of clear plastic. You can write or draw onto sheets and then stack one upon another to build up a completed image. Gimp allows a similar effect to be achieved electronically.

Layers work in a similar way but they can also be coloured and hold a variety of image content (eg photos, drawings, writing, shapes etc). The opacity of each layer can be varied allowing controlled visibility of the layers below. Layers can be made visible or invisible with a single mouse click on the eye icon on the layer dialogue.
